For our single vineyard Pinot Noirs, we strive to showcase how each individual site creates distinct and dramatic wines. The 2009 Pinot from Burnside Road is no exception. This vibrant and energetic wine has all the hallmark aromas associated with cool-climate Pinot Noir.

There is a core of intense black cherry, but the aromas then focus on savory spices: fennel seed, new leather, thyme, earth and forest floor. It’s a complex mix that is constantly changing and evolving in the glass. In the mouth, the wine shows off its silky side. There is a wonderful viscosity that’s big and lush but kept in check by the wine’s vivacious acidity. The black cherry makes another appearance here, but is counterbalanced by the wine’s savory qualities. These flavors and contrasts pleasantly linger and interact during a long and fulfilling finish. Because of the wine’s high natural acidity, it’s an easy wine to pair with a wide variety of food, but rack of lamb or spiced, braised meats would make an excellent combination.

Wine Enthusiast

If you open this bottle before late 2009, you’ll find a tightly wound wine marked by acidity and tannins. In other words, not showing its best. Inside the structure is remarkably ripe fruit, along the lines of cherries, currants, pomegranates and cola. It’s a big, exuberant wine, but it does need time, and has the balance to achieve it.

Score: 92. —Steve Heimoff, May 01, 2009.
