Alto Moncayo

Dark purple core with a fuchsia rim. Very dense aromas of plum, graphite, blackberry, white pepper and lighter floral hints. Very full bodied on the palate with well balanced acid and big ripe tannins. Sweet and full with great stone and nickel minerality. Sweet blackberry and vanilla with long lingering roasted cocoa beans in the finish.

Wine Enthusiast

Gets out of the blocks with massive cedar, balsamic, tobacco and bold berry aromas. It's super rich and thorough in the mouth, with excellent balance for a 16% ABV Garnacha. Flavors of roasted black fruits, coconut, coffee and mocha are giant; finishes even more oaky and barrel-driven, with vanilla, coconut and toast flavors. Drink now through the winter of 2013.

Score: 93. —Michael Schachner, December 15, 2011.

Wine Advocate

This was a great opportunity to look at one of the flagship wines of importer Jorge Ordonez's portfolio. Alto Moncayo is a 100% old vine Grenache cuvee (900-1,000 cases produced depending on the vintage) that is a joint project between Jorge Ordonez and Barossa winemaker, Chris Ringland. Five generations of vignerons have farmed over 210 acres of primarily old vine Grenache at Alto Moncayo, a wine that is produced from incredibly low yields of 500 grams of grape bunches per vine. There are never more than six to eight bunches on these ancient head-pruned Grenache vines. The wine is fermented in open-top wood fermenters, and spends 19 months in 100% new oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. The fruit is all destemmed. I tasted these ten vintages of Alto Moncayo in September, and I was blown away by how well they were showing.

Score: 92. —Robert Parker, November 2013.

Wine Spectator

This alluring red packs plenty of flavor in its medium-bodied frame, offering blackberry, brandied cherry, chocolate and spice notes over smooth tannins. There's just enough acidity to keep this lively and focused. Drink now through 2013. 600 cases imported.
